I know that lots of modern metal bands of nowadays are using the drop D tuning as their basic one. Also, there are lots of other bands who prefer the classic E tuning, but you will agree with me that many of them have at least one or two songs where they are using the drop D tuning. In this way they are just trying to diversify their albums and concert programs and I understand them very much because a single different note can change the whole song and the sound of the whole band. I also like the drop D tuning and often use it in my own compositions, as I told before, it gives me a completely another sound to the whole song!
